The Chilean writer Carlos Franz has won the 2nd Mario Vargas Llosa Biennial Novel Award for his novel Si te vieras con mis ojos, a novel that tells the story of a love triangle in Chile at the end of the 19th century, with some very curious characters based on real figures. Franz is the author of another three novels, non-fiction books and short stories and is also a member of the Chilean Language Academy. The writer and journalist Gastón García Marinozzi (Argentina) has recently released his first novel, Viaje al fin de la memoria, a peculiar road trip about investigative journalists. In conversation with the writer and literary critic Pablo Duarte.

Emiliano Monge is one of the most celebrated Mexican writers. His striking novel, Las tierras arrasadas, which portrays the terror and poverty experienced by migrants in Mexico today, was published in 2015 to critical success; he is also the author of a book of short stories and another two novels. The writer Carolina Sanín (Colombia) has been a columnist for the most prominent Colombian media publications (El Espectador, Semana, La Silla Vacía); her latest novel, Los niños, tells the unusual and disturbing story of the relationship between a boy and a woman.

The lawyer and human rights activist Philippe Sands analyses our relationship with history, guilt and family legacies through a documentary in which he interviews the elderly children of two civil servants who worked for the Nazi government. The fathers of those interviewed were responsible for thousands of deaths, including the members of the Sands family. An unsettling documentary that lets us reflect on the past’s impact on the present. Followed by a discussion with Philippe Sands and the Mexican lawyer Alberto Székely.

The Mohawk writer Gerald Taiaiake Alfred lectures in the Politics Department at the University of Victoria, Canada. In 2010 the Native American and Indigenous Studies Association named his book, Wasáse: Indigenous Pathways of Action and Freedom, as one of the most influential works in Native American studies. The Zapotec writer Pergentino José Ruiz (Mexico) has a Master’s Degree in Hispano-American Literature from the Universidad Austral in Chile. His most recently published works include the book of short stories Hormigas rojas (Almadía, 2012) and the poetry collection Lenguaje de pájaros (Ediciones Avispero, 2014) in a trilingual edition: Zapotec, Spanish and English. His work has been included in Mexico 20, a compilation of the best Mexican writers aged under 40, published by Malpaso. They will be interviewed by Ingrid Bejerman, coordinator of the Canada in the Americas (CITA) initiative, run by the McGill Institute for the Study of Canada.

Jonathan Shaw (United States) was born from the relationship between the jazz legend Artie Shaw and the Hollywood star Doris Dowling. During his teenage years, he met Charles Bukowski, became addicted to heroin and entered into a spiral of youth crime. Aged 19 he travelled in Central and South America, where he lived for several years. In 2008 he published his first novel, Narcisa, which soon became a cult book with fans including Johnny Depp, Iggy Pop and Jim Jarmusch. Recently published in Mexico, the novel tells the passionate love story of Cigano, a former addict, and Narcisa, a prostitute addicted to heroin. Shaw will talk to the publisher and writer Diego Rabasa.

Caparrós is also a journalist and a novelist, author of several books, one of which, Los Living, won the 2011 Herralde Novel Prize. He will talk to the journalist Alberto Arce.
