Joumana Haddad in conversation with Felipe Restrepo Pombo

Joumana Haddad is a writer, poet and editor of the cultural section of the Lebanese newspaper An Nahar. From 2007 to 2011 she was administrator of the Arabic Booker Prize, a literary award for novels in Arabic, and she is currently on the board of the prize. A women’s rights activist, she presents Superman is an Arab, a work that denounces the Arab world’s patriarchal system, rooted in the three monotheistic religions.

The Missing Picture, by Rithy Panh

This animated film deals with the atrocities committed by the government of Pol Pot’s communist regime in Cambodia. Director Rithy Panh’s family members disappeared one by one during this period. To tell the story of this time, Panh looked for images, but did not find any. So the director has created these missing images using modelling clay and dioramas. The narration tells the story of a historical nightmare and a society’s trauma and memory.

At this event Thomas Bunstead, Roberto Frías, Pura López Colomé  and Víctor Andresco will talk about their experiences as translators and the challenges this activity involves. Thomas Bunstead specialises in translation from Spanish to English, and has translated works by Eduardo Halfon, Enrique Vila-Matas, Antonio Garrido and others. Roberto Frías is a writer, journalist and editor; he has translated writers such as Hanif Kureishi, Oscar Wilde, Thomas Hardy and Francisco Goldman. The poet and critic Pura López Colomé has translated works by Samuel Beckett, Seamus Heaney, William Carlos Williams, Robert Creeley and others into Spanish. Víctor Andresco is a writer and has translated works by authors of the stature of Chekhov and Tolstoy into Spanish.

The author of poems, essays, short stories and novels, Juan Bonilla is the author of El Estadio de Mármol, Yo soy, yo eres, yo es, Nadie conoce a nadie, a novel made into a film by the director Mateo Gil, and The Nubian Prince, winner of Seix Barral’s Biblioteca Breve prize. He is also editor of the magazine Zut. Juan Bonilla will present Prohibido entrar sin pantalones, a novel featuring the revolutionary poet Vladimir Mayakovsky that won the first Mario Vargas Llosa Biennial Novel Prize in 2014.

Abraham Cruzvillegas in conversation with Diego Rabasa

Abraham Cruzvillegas is a multi-disciplinary artist who explores the creative media of video, sculpture, installation and performance. He is represented by the Kurimanzutto Gallery in Mexico City, he has had a solo exhibition at London’s Tate Modern and has participated at dOCUMENTA (Kassel, Germany). He is also one of the founders of La Galería de Comercio, a project that was initiated as an alternative to the standard art world channels and which presents artistic projects free, in the streets. He will talk about his career and work.

Rosa Beltrán in conversation with Felipe Restrepo Pombo

El cuerpo expuesto covers biological and social matters related to the human body and its evolution, telling two stories at the same time: that of the naturalist Charles Darwin and that of a contemporary who sees himself as “the last Darwinist”. Its author, Rosa Beltrán, has won awards including the Premio Planeta– Joaquín Mortiz de Novela 1995  Prize for her novel La corte de los ilusos, an award given by the American Association of University Women (AAUW) and the National University Prize for Young Academics; she is also a member of the Mexican Academy of the Language.

The American Alan Weisman is a scientific writer and author of the famous work The World Without Us. There are no plaques to commemorate it, but the most important literary movement in Spanish of the 20th century opened up to the world from Barcelona between 1967 and 1976. Xavi Ayén, cultural journalist for the Catalan newspaper La Vanguardia, presents Aquellos años del Boom. García Márquez, Vargas Llosa y el grupo de amigos que lo cambiaron todo, a book which won the 2013 Gaziel Biographies and Memoirs Prize.

Killoffer in conversation with Raphaël Meltz

Killoffer is a central figure in the world of the French comic, not only because of his extensive bibliography, but also as one of the people behind the important publishing house, L'Association. Killoffer works for a range of newspapers and magazines, and is the author of books such as Viva Pâtàmâch!, 676 Apparitions of Killoffer and Le Rock et si je ne m'abuse le roll. This multi-talented draughtsman is able to do everything from cartoons to the covers of children’s books, by way of illustrations for texts like the Communist Party Manifesto and the creation of detailed and dreamlike drawings for display at art galleries.

Alberto Montt in conversation with Felipe Rosete

The artist Alberto Montt and the publisher Felipe Rosete will talk about the position of the graphic novel within the publishing industry, as well as the author’s work. The Chilean Alberto Montt is particularly well known for his blog En dosis diarias, which won the Deustche Welle award for Best Blog in Spanish in 2011. Further to this, nine books compiling his cartoons have been published. He has also illustrated forty children’s books and is reputed for his contributions to the newspapers El Comercio in Ecuador and El Mercurio in Chile.

Rubén Gallo, a writer and lecturer at Princeton University, presents his new book, Mexican Modernity: The Avant-garde and the Technological Revolution. He will talk to the writer Valeria Luiselli about the avant-garde’s fascination with machines. Rubén Gallo is also recognised for his research into Freud’s impact in Mexico.

Ignacio Martínez de Pisón and Myriam Moscona in conversation with Malcolm Otero Barral

Ignacio Martínez de Pisón is the writer of the non-fiction work Enterrar a los muertos, winner of the Rodolfo Walsh and Dulce Chacón prizes. It tells the story of the return to Spain of a Spanish family from the Moroccan protectorate during decolonisation. Myriam Moscona is a Mexican writer from a Bulgarian Sephardic family. She won the Xavier Villaurrutia Prize, given by writers to writers, for Tela de sevoya, which recreates the historical panorama of the Sephardic community at three crucial moments: the expulsion from Spain in 1492, the Nazi extermination and arrival in Mexico.

The Devil and Daniel Johnston, by Jeff Feuerzeig

The Devil and Daniel Johnston is a documentary about the life of the cult American musician Daniel Johnston, from his childhood to the present. The director won the award for Best Director at the 2005 Sundance Festival thanks to this film; it presents the terrible but fascinating story of this singer-songwriter who, due to drug consumption and mental illness, would end up having imaginary encounters with the devil. The documentary makes use of both Super 8 recordings and the comics with which the artist documented not only his creative process, but also his life.

Margo Glantz in conversation with Miriam Moscona

Margo Glantz is one of Mexico’s most important writers and thinkers. She has written more than twenty-five books of essays, short stories and novels, and won both the 2004 Premio Nacional de Ciencias y Artes award and the 2010 FIL Prize. She will present her latest book, Yo también me acuerdo, a new kind of autobiography inspired by the work of Georges Pèrec. In 1978, Georges Pèrec published a book called Je me souviens (Memories), which consists only of short paragraphs beginning with the words “I remember…”. Other artists such as Pier Paolo Pasolini and Zeina Abirached carried out similar exercises in telling their lives through memory fragments in a free flow of ideas, emotions and images.

Luiz Ruffato in conversation with Diego Rabasa

Luiz Ruffato is considered to be one of contemporary Brazilian literature’s most brilliant writers. Awarded the Machado de Assis prize by the Fundação Biblioteca Nacional, he has also received awards from the Brazilian Associação Paulista de Críticos de Arte and the Cuban Casa de las Américas. His latest works translated into Spanish are Mamma, son tanto felice and El mundo enemigo.

Paul Bogard on The End of Night

The End of Night: Searching for Natural Darkness in an Age of Artificial Light is a book that reflects on ecology and urban development. This book, which is personal memoir, travel writing and scientific observation of nature, is a defence of the night as a natural phenomenon that we should preserve. Paul Bogard lectures creative non-fiction at the James Madison University, Virginia, and has edited the anthology Let There Be Light: Testimony on Behalf of the Dark.

Salman Rushdie in conversation with Valeria Luiselli

Born in Mumbai, Salman Rushdie is a British writer and essayist, author of books such as Midnight’s Children (winner of the Booker, James Tait Black and Best of Booker prizes), The Satanic Verses (Whitbread Prize for best novel) and the memoir Joseph Anton, among others. This winner of the European Literature Prize, granted by the Austrian state, and member of the Royal Society of Literature, has a style that has often been compared with Latin American magic realism.

The biologist Sergio Rossi has participated in three polar research trips and at this event he will talk about some important matters related to the white continent: survival in a such an extreme climate, the formation of the ozone hole, the effects of climate change, the ecological deterioration caused by the permanent bases installed there, the possibility (and dangers) of economic exploitation of the immense riches of all kinds hidden in the Antarctic, and why a massive accumulation of ice in our planet’s most remote zone is essential for our future as a species. The American of Japanese origin, Katie Kitamura, is a writer and literary critic. She is the author of The Longshot and Gone to the Forest, both shortlisted for New York Public Library’s Young Lions Fiction Award. She has also written for The Guardian, The New York Times and Wired, and is a regular contributor to Frieze and Art Monthly. Forrest Gander is a US writer, author of a number of books of poetry, essays, translations and the novel As a Friend. His book Core Samples from the World was shortlisted for the Pulitzer and National Book Critics’ Circle prizes.

Eduardo Rabasa in conversation with Xavi Ayén

La suma de los ceros is the first novel by Eduardo Rabasa. It is a story set in a microcosm that could be almost any neighbourhood in Latin America, in which the characters try to escape from an apparently unavoidable fate; it is a text that criticises power and its forms, including those who go under the name of democrats. Eduardo Rabasa is an editor, writer of a weekly column for Milenio and has translated books by authors such as Morris Berman, George Orwell and Somerset Maugham.

The recent events in the Gaza Strip are forcing us to reflect on how conflict is reported in the press. How should political reporting be carried out? With Lina Meruane, a Chilean writer, teacher of Latin American culture at the University of New York and head of the independent publisher Brutas Editoras; Óscar Guardiola Rivera, a Colombian philosopher and Senior Lecturer in Law at London’s Birkbeck, University of London, whose work covers the workings of different political systems; and Diego Enrique Osorno, a Mexican journalist and writer who specialises in political conflict.

Marvellous tales. With Salman Rushdie

Salman Rushdie (Mumbai, 1947), author of the famous novel Midnight’s Children, winner of the 1981 Booker Prize, is acclaimed as one of the most celebrated writers of our time. Author of more than 11 novels and a well-received and honest autobiography (Joseph Anton. A Memoir), Rushdie offers us a special talk on the East’s ‘marvellous tales’, such as One Thousand and One Nights, Ramayana, Mahabharata and Panchatantra, and their impact on his own work, as well as their influence around the world, including on magic realism. He will also talk about the importance of the fictionality of fiction, and the opposition of the fantasy and realist traditions.

El Chamuco

Six members of the team behind El Chamuco, a satirical Mexican magazine, tell us about their work. The event features Rafael Barajas “El Fisgón”, a Mexican activist and intellectual; José García Hernández, co-editor of El Chamuco and a political caricaturist for several newspapers; Noé Lynn Almada “La Dama”, actor and caricature artist with many links to the theatre; Fernando De Anda Gorráez “El Fer”, a graphic designer who specialises in humorous illustration; and Rafael Pineda “Rapé”, who is a political caricaturist and contributor to a range of publications.

Brenda Lozano, Fernanda Melchor and Samanta Schweblin in conversation with Felipe Restrepo Pombo

Brenda Lozano presents her second novel, Cuaderno ideal, a story about a woman’s wait for the return of her beloved. Falsa liebre is the first novel by Fernanda Melchor, a story about the lives of the underclass of a Veracruz in upheaval due to crime and corruption. Samanta Schweblin has published two story collections, El núcleo del disturbio and Pájaros en la boca, which have won her a number of prizes. These three writers will talk about their works with the journalist Felipe Restrepo.

Power Paola in conversation with Josué Martínez

Power Paola does illustrations for books and magazines and is also the author of the graphic novels QP and Virus tropical. This second novel is being adapted into a 3D animated film due to be released in 2016. Javier Saéz is a Spanish graphic artist, author of curious books like Animalario del profesor Revillod, La memoria del señor Verde, Dos bobas mariposas and the illustrations for an unusual version of Gulliver’s Travels, among others. In September he published the graphic novel Extraños. Both artists will talk to Josué Martínez about the world of illustration.

Daniel Johnston & Carmen Costa band

One of Kurt Cobain’s favourite musicians: Daniel Dale Johnston, is a US musician, composer and artist, who is also admired by other major groups such as Sonic Youth. Johnston says that his songs tell stories of “unrequited love and existential torment”. His latest album is entitled Is and Always Was (2009). Aside from his music, he is a cult illustrator and his works have been shown at The Aquarium gallery in London, the Clementine Gallery in New York, the Arts Factory in Paris and the Liverpool Biennial.

Marçal Aquino in conversation with Élmer Mendoza

The Brazilian journalist and fiction and screenplay writer, Marçal Aquino, has published books of stories, poetry and children’s novels, as well as three high-intensity novels: O invasor, Cabeça a prêmio and Yo recibiría las peores noticias de tus lindos labios. Brazilian fiction and has won several awards. He has written screenplays for film and television, and three of his books have been adapted for film by the director Beto Brant.

Literature and migration. Víctor Andresco, Margo Glantz, Myriam Moscona and Luigi Amara in conversation with Roberto Frías

Being a migrant or a descendent of migrants is an experience that marks a person’s life in a profound way. A number of authors who have emigrated or who come from emigrant families will talk, at this event, about what this means to them at a creative level, and the influences this has had on their literary work. Featuring Víctor Andresco, writer, screenplay writer, literary critic and producer; Margo Glantz, writer and literary critic; Myriam Moscona, journalist and poet; and Luigi Amara, poet, essayist and editor.

Hari Kunzru and Adam Thirlwell in conversation with Thomas Bunstead

Hari Kunzru is a journalist, editor and author of novels like The Impressionist, Transmission, My Revolutions and Gods Without Men. His works have been critical and popular successes and have been translated into more than twenty languages. Adam Thirlwell is the author of the novels The Escape and Politics, also translated into numerous languages. He also publishes articles regularly in the international press. Both have been included on lists of the best young British novelists by the magazine Granta.

Daniel Espartaco in conversation with Mariana H

Daniel Espartaco Sánchez, who has received numerous awards for his stories, published his first novel, Autos usados, in 2012. This book, which received the Bellas Artes Narrativa Colima prize, tells the story of the generation who passed through adolescence in northern Mexico in the nineties, told from the point of view and through the experiences of the protagonist, Elías.

El extraditado is the latest work by Juan Carlos Reyna,. Reyna is also the author of La(s) estética(s) de la mundialización, a book that won the 2008 Baja California State Literature Prize in the cultural journalism category.

Rithy Panh in conversation with Oscar Guardiola Rivera

“At the age of thirteen –says Rithy Panh–, I lost my whole family in just a few weeks... They were swept away by the cruelty and madness of the Khmer Rouge. (...) And so I had to get on with life, because I had been left with nothing”. Thirty years after the end of Pol Pot’s regime in Cambodia, this film director and documentary-maker, well known for works such as Rice People and S-21: The Khmer Rouge Killing Machine, decided to interview one of the men behind the Cambodian genocide: Duch. The Elimination is a book that has received the Joseph Kessel award, the Grand Prix SGDL for non-fiction, a France Télévisions award and the Aujourd’hui prize.

Sergio González Rodríguez in conversation with Pablo de Llano

Sergio González won the 2014 Anagrama Non-fiction Prize for Campo de guerra, a work that explores the different economic, social and historical factors that have turned Mexico into a dysfunctional state in which conflict has a major presence, as well as the country’s geopolitical position and its particular relationship with the United States. González Rodríguez, whose book El centauro en el paisaje was shortlisted for that award in 1992, is also the author of the acclaimed Huesos en el desierto (2002), a chilling report on women murdered in Ciudad Juárez.

Luis Arturo Ramos is the author of books such as Intramuros, Éste era un gato and, more recently, Cartas para Julia. The writer Ana García Bergua is the author of a number of novels and short story collections, including Isla de bobos and La bomba de San José, for which she received the 2013 Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz Literature Prize.

Elvira Navarro and Jorge Alberto Gudiño with César Silva Márquez

The Spaniard Elvira Navarro, listed as one of the top 22 Spanish-speaking fiction writers under 35 by the magazine Granta, is the author of La ciudad en invierno and La ciudad feliz. The Mexican writer Jorge Alberto Gudiño is the author of Los trenes nunca van hacia el este, Con amor, tu hija and his latest novel, Instrucciones para mudar un pueblo; he is also a university lecturer and a literary critic, well known for his work presenting the radio programme La Tertulia and for his contributions to magazines such as Rolling Stone.

Two fiction and screenplay writers will talk to us about writing for the big screen. Marçal Aquino has written a number of screenplays, some of which have been adaptations of his own novels, such as Yo recibiría las peores noticias de tus lindos labios  and O invasor. Ray Loriga, as well as being a screenplay writer, has directed films such as La pistola de mi hermano and Teresa, el cuerpo de Cristo.

Three prominent magazine editors will talk to the literary editor Malcolm Otero Barral about the ins and outs of their profession and their experiences. Joumana Haddad is responsible for the cultural pages of the Lebanese newspaper An Nahar and is the founder and editor of Jasad (“body” in Arabic), a controversial publication in Arabic that specialises in literature, art and body sciences. Felipe Restrepo is the editor of the magazine Gatopardo and Mario Jursich edits the famous Colombian magazine El Malpensante.

“Cher Jean Renoir. Je vous écris...” Piano concert and readings on Antoine de Saint-Exupéry

Antoine de Saint-Exupéry and Jean Renoir arrived in New York as the best of friends and with a great project in mind: to make a film inspired by Terre des Hommes, Saint-Exupéry latest work and winner of the French Academy’s Grand Prix du Roman and the US National Book Award. The Vol de Nuit/Vuelo Nocturno association, with Marie-Christine Barrault reading and Marcela Roggeri on piano, present a performance that has been successfully shown in France, Switzerland, Argentina and Uruguay.

Hugo Hiriart in conversation with Luigi Amara

Hugo Hiriart is an author who has worked in a number of different genres and fields. This dramatist, theatre director, novelist, essayist, screenplay writer, journalist and painter is also a member of the Mexican Academy of the Language. He has won an award for the best film script given by the Academia de Ciencia y Artes Cinematográficas, the 2000 Juan Ruiz de Alarcón National Literature Prize and the 2009 Premio Nacional de Ciencias y Artes award. At this event, he will talk to the writer Luigi Amara about his latest book El águila y el gusano, a reflection on the political and social reality of contemporary Mexico.

Óscar Guardiola Rivera in conversation with Diego Fonseca

Óscar Guardiola Rivera is a writer, philosopher and lecturer on law and human rights at Birkbeck, University of London; he also contributes to The Guardian and The Spectator. He will talk about one of the most important episodes in the history of Latin America, the assassination of the Chilean president Salvador Allende, which is the subject of his latest book: Story of a death foretold: The coup against Salvador Allende, 11 September 1973.

Lejanía tells the story of a family marked by a violent event that took place in the nineteen-seventies. The documentary reconstructs the event based on the testimony of different members of the family; this is a report that deals with pain, memory, forgiveness and how family secrets affect later generations, with the difficulties they experience in finding out about or accepting events.

Concha Buika

Concha Buika is a Spanish artist of African parents whose music is a combination of different styles. Genres such as jazz, copla and African rhythms are all reinterpreted in her albums. Her vocal sensuality and the originality of her songs make her a unique figure in the world of music.
